08/27/2025 — I started this series of paintings back in 2023. I was in the middle of my third year of teaching, starting my master’s degree, and beginning to plan my wedding. Having just started therapy and being in studio classes for my degree, I began work on these paintings; the original goal of which was to heal my inner child and explore the experiences stolen from me as a closeted queer child.

I remained closeted until I was 21, missed out on having a high school sweetheart, was unable to wear the clothes that made me feel beautiful, unable to play with the toys I wanted… all out of fear of being seen as too feminine, too gay. I was robbed of the experiences that plenty of straight, white, cisgender youth get to have.

I continued working on this series, and the days ticked by so slowly that it was as if time had stopped. My negative, distorted feelings about my body and mind worsened. I started wondering if I was in the right career, wondering if I had wasted years of education and thousands of dollars on something I actually hated. Many sleepless nights later, the story of these paintings warped into something else. They became about loathing, depression, and wanting to lock myself away until the mushrooms and worms finally came to claim me.

Since that time, I’m happy to say that I have reconnected with myself… albeit in a different way than I first pictured when I started this chapter. I’ve learned that even if the things that make me feel beautiful make me a monster to everyone else, I’ll still sharpen my horns in the mirror each morning with the biggest smile on my face. I’ll do anything for the little kid with the Ariel doll, because that kid is and always will be me, and I love them so much.

Abomination is a story about metamorphosis. This series was heavily inspired by analog horror works like Remy Abode’s Gemini Home Entertainment, Martin Walls' The Walten Files, and Darian Quilloy’s Vita Carnis, as well as the film Skinamarink directed by Kyle Edward Ball.

INT. JOANNE’S HOUSE. DAY

JOANNE is brushing her teeth when her phone begins to ring. She spits and wipes her mouth before answering.

JOANNE

Hello?

BARB

Hi, Jo! I was wondering if you wanted to get lunch this afternoon.

JOANNE

I can’t, Noah’s wedding shower is this afternoon.

BARB

What do you mean? I didn’t know that was happening today.

JOANNE

Barb, you weren’t invited

Barb begins crying

JOANNE

They figured you wouldn’t want to go, seeing as you don’t approve of their marriage.

Barb pauses for a beat, sniffles

BARB

I think it’s an abomination
